It's great to be an American
On the Fourth of July,
To enjoy the benefits of freedom
And to stop and ask myself why.

Why am I allowed to worship freely
When many others certainly are not?
Who gave me the right to this freedom?
Who for it have valiantly fought.

I never shall know in this lifetime
The many who won freedom for me.
But this Fourth of July I want to say thank you
To them, who ever they be.

As I listen and look at the fireworks,
May I treasure freedom with my head and my heart.
May I ever rejoice and be thankful
And may I resolve to do always my part.

As I'm thinking of those who came before me,
And of the sacrifices so many have made,
My thoughts go back even farther
To the debt that Jesus Christ paid.

You see he, too, died for my freedom.
The ultimate sacrifice he made.
The penalty for my sins and wrong doings,
By his actions that day, were paid.

Because he died in my place I have freedom-
Freedom from sin and the grave.
I’ll ever rejoice and be thankful
That his life for my freedom he gave.
